To find out if you need more RAM right-click the taskbar and select Task Manager. Click the Performance tab: In the lower-left corner, you’ll see how much RAM is in use. If, under normal use, the Available option is less than 25 percentage  of the total, an upgrade may do you some good.

Adding RAM to your PC usually delivers the more efficiency for your upgrade, but only if you buy the right kind of memory module for your PC.

What is RAM

Random Access Memory (RAM) is a hardware device that allows information to be stored and retrieved on a computer. RAM is a form of computer data storage which stores frequently used program instructions to increase the general speed of a system. A random-access memory device allows data items to be read or written in almost the same amount of time irrespective of the physical location of data inside the memory. It is usually associated with DRAM, which is a type of memory module. Because information is accessed randomly instead of sequentially like it is on a CD or hard drive, the computer can access the data much faster. However, unlike ROM or the hard drive, RAM is a volatile memory and requires power to keep the data accessible. If the computer is turned off, all data contained in RAM is lost.

Types of RAM

There are many types of RAM, but the most commonly used forms of modern RAM are Static RAM (SRAM) and Dynamic RAM (DRAM).

SRAM (Static Random Access Memory), a bit of data is stored using the state of a six transistor memory cell. This form of RAM is more expensive to produce, but is generally faster and requires less dynamic power than DRAM. In modern computers, SRAM is often used as cache memory for the CPU.

DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) stores a bit of data using a transistor and capacitor pair, which together comprise a DRAM memory cell. The capacitor holds a high or low charge (1 or 0, respectively), and the transistor acts as a switch that lets the control circuitry on the chip read the capacitor’s state of charge or change it. As this form of memory is less expensive to produce than static RAM, it is the predominant form of computer memory used in modern computers.

What You Need: How to Find Out

The main factor that determines the RAM is what you’re running on your computer and how much of that RAM you are trying to use. Big Capacity RAM is useful if you are into professional video or audio editing. Yet even then, 8GB to 16 GB of RAM should be enough to handle running several professional applications simultaneously.

If you’re a gamer, you may get some benefits from having 16 GB, but 8 GB can handle most games. Making the leap up to 32 GB is currently unnecessary. At that point, you may be better of getting faster sticks.

There are situations where more RAM is needed, but you are more likely to encounter such problem if you manage servers. The demands of running applications, games, and websites simply aren’t that high.

What is Best: Capacity or Fast Performance

The amount of RAM you have is more important to a point. If you don’t have enough RAM, your computer will simulate “virtual” RAM by swapping unused parts or all of programs to the hard disk in order to make room for others. The swapping process is very slow and makes your computer less efficient on getting work done.

Going over 8 GB isn’t really necessary yet unless you’re a more demanding user.

If you are a more demanding user, you are better off getting more RAM. In other cases, you will see better results going with a higher frequency and less latency depends on what software you want to run. However, in general, I would think 4 GB of ram with 3.7 GHz is better than 2.7 GHz with 8 GB of RAM for pure speed. And DDR3 may be faster than DDR2 but SPECIFICS matter. If you need to run the video editing software, a browser because the editor’s user’s forum with editing tips is online and Adobe Reader because the software’s user’s guide is a PDF then you need more memory than if you just ran the video editing software. The video editing software itself should tell you what sort of memory requirements it has. With the cost of RAM, most laptops and desktops now start with 4GB. For the majority of people, that is enough.
